Necessity is the mother of inventionand the
genesis of Green Design Furniture. The inspiration for our sliding
dovetail assembly and the thoughtful use of materials came from
designer Douglas Greens experience living in a less-than-spacious
New York City apartment, as well as his fascination with the exquisite
form and functionality of traditional Japanese wood joinery. The
first prototypes of a chair led to tables and cabinets, and the
Classic Collection was born.
In 1994, Douglas Green opened Green Design Furniture
on the Portland, Maine, waterfront. He received a patent for his
unique joinery system in 1995. In the years since, his talents have
been applied not only to furniture design, but also to the great
challenge of creating a healthy company that can maintain its values
and the quality of its work as it grows.
Ive seen and worked for a variety of dysfunctional
family and corporate businesses, and have always wondered what a
truly healthy workplace would look and feel like. Im very
proud that after eight years, we have made great strides in creating
a workplace that combines the values of collaborative team effort
and the respect for an individuals growth and creativity.
I have always believed that work and personal contentment should
be intertwined and that creating a workplace where that is possible,
is the key to growing a company that will endure.
Douglas Green grew up in Scarsdale, New York. He earned
a BA at Bowdoin College and a masters degree in industrial
design at Pratt Institute. He continues to be influenced by many
genres, from industrial design to fine arts. This enthusiasm and
curiosity about new influences is reflected in the evolution of
his designs.
